Comparing Crossover SUVs: Subaru Outback vs. the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V
The Subaru Outback is one of our most popular rugged crossover SUVs. Its lower, wagon-like stance and premium finishes make it a comfortable option. We also love the Outback for its adventure-ready credentials, like a high ground clearance, standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, and rugged body cladding. Not only can the Outback handle outdoor adventures, but it also looks good for everyday driving.
We know you have many options and great competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V as your next capable crossover SUV. Our team at Ciocca Subaru of Flemington is excited to show you why the Subaru Outback stands out from the crowd. Check out all the reasons for choosing the new Subaru Outback over the competition and schedule a test drive to experience all the excellent features in person.

Subaru Outback vs. Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 is a very popular, capable, and efficient crossover SUV. The Subaru Outback is the better choice, especially with new RAV4s no longer available in their rugged, off-road trims. Toyota has decided to drop the more capable models from the lineup and the more advanced all-wheel drive systems that used to rival the Outback's standard symmetrical all-wheel drive.
While these vehicles are similarly priced, the Subaru Outback is more capable than ever and offers a range of exciting options. With more off-road capabilities, towing capacity, and power, the Subaru Outback outperforms the Toyota RAV4. The Outback has two engines to choose from, depending on the trim level, including a frugal 182-horsepower base engine and a more powerful 260-horsepower turbocharged option. Both engines pair with a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive. The Outback has a max towing capacity of up to 2,700 pounds - great for additional cargo and small recreational vehicles.
The Toyota RAV4 has only one engine configuration: a 203-horsepower four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. While the fuel efficiency is about two mpg better than that of the most efficient Outback, the capabilities are vastly limited, with towing ability limited to just 1,500 pounds.
Subaru Outback vs. Honda CR-V
The Outback takes the edge in performance against that weaker Honda CR-V, which is better suited to staying on paved roads. The Honda CR-V comes standard with a 190-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, a continuously variable transmission, and standard front-wheel drive. Towing is limited to a maximum of 1,500 pounds, but only with additional towing accessories.
The Subaru Outback is also superior in terms of the number of standard advanced technology and safety features. Most models come standard with an 11.6-inch infotainment system with the latest hands-free technology and wireless smartphone integration. The Honda CR-V has a much smaller 7.0-inch standard touchscreen, with only the highest trim level offering a slightly bigger 9.0-inch display.
The Subaru Outback also leads in safety with more advanced features you won't find in the Honda CR-V. As part of the comprehensive EyeSight suite and available upgrades, the Outback offers a DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, automatic emergency steering, auto-leveling headlights, and rear side airbags - none of these are available in the Honda CR-V.
