SUBARU OUTBACK VS FORESTER

Subaru Forester vs. Subaru Outback: Which Subaru SUV is Right for You?

Subaru SUVs are some of the most well-rounded models in their class, offering comfortable accommodations, versatile utility, and real all-season capability. They provide roomy cabins, flexible cargo space, and lots of appealing features and tech. And thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive and signature Subaru DNA, they can venture places many class competitors can't.

Two of the automaker's most well-known SUVs-the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback-are popular for their impressive blend of on-road comfort and adventurous capability. While these crossover may appear similar at first glance, they offer unique characteristics that make them more suitable for different needs and preferences. To help you determine which one is best for your Hillsborough drives, here's a quick overview of their important distinguishing attributes.

Dimensions

  • Forester L x W x H: 182.7" x 71.5" x 67.5"
  • Outback L x W x H: 191.1" x 73" x 66.4"

One primary distinction between these two crossovers is their size-the Forester is a compact model, while the Outback occupies the midsize class. While the Outback is longer and wider, the Forester is slightly taller due to the Outback's wagon heritage. Both models have at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance, making them well-suited to exploring beyond the asphalt. However, the Outback's wider stance, lower height, and heavier curb weight can help it feel smoother over uneven terrain. Conversely, the Forester's shorter length and slimmer width give it easier maneuverability for busy city streets and crowded parking lots.

Passenger volume between the Forester and Outback is nearly equal. However, the Outback may feel a bit roomier thanks to its extra shoulder room and hip room, while the Forester's taller ride height provides the driver a slightly elevated vantage point. All but the base Forester trim offer 26.9 cubic feet for cargo behind the second row and 69.1 with the rear seats folded. The lack of a panoramic moonroof gives the entry-level Forester even more carrying capacity (28.9-74.2 cubic feet). The Subaru Outback leverages its larger dimensions to provide 32.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 75.6 behind the first.

Powertrain Options

The Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback come standard with a 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder making 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. A Lineartronic® transmission optimizes responsiveness and efficiency. And Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system is standard, providing surefooted handling and control in a variety of conditions. Subaru's X-MODE advanced traction management system is included in all but the base Forester trim, while the Outback gets it as standard equipment. Both models achieve EPA-estimated fuel ratings of up to 26 mpg city. However, the Forester's lighter weight gives it a small advantage on the highway, with an EPA-rated 33 mpg to the Outback's 32 mpg.*

Are you looking for something more potent to power your Somerville commute? Outback XT and Wilderness models upgrade to a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER engine, boosting output to 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This extra power advantage increases the Outback's max tow rating to 3,500 pounds. Most Forester trims can tow up to 1,500 pounds. However, the Forester Wilderness trim's rugged chassis and suspension tuning allow it to tow up to 3,000 pounds.

Trims and Features

The Forester and Outback share many trim-level similarities. However, the Outback's lineup has a few feature advantages-like a unique Onyx Edition model with stylish dark-themed accents, StarTex™ water-repellent upholstery, and a dual-Function X-MODE system with Deep Snow/Mud settings. A 180-degree front-view camera is standard in four Outback models (Touring, Touring XT, Onyx Edition XT, and Wilderness) and one Forester trim (Wilderness). The Outback's base trim also has dual 7-inch STARLINK® touchscreens, while all higher tiers get a larger 11.6-inch display. Through the 2023 model, the Subaru Forester has a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen and an optional 8-inch display.

While the Forester and Outback are among the most capable in their class for exploring off-road, Subaru's new Wilderness trim takes their trail-going abilities to a new level. This adventure-ready configuration adds Dual-function X-MODE with Low Ratio Gradient Control, Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, skid plates, a front trail camera, and more. However, the Outback Wilderness has a higher ground clearance (9.5 vs. 9.2 inches) and more power courtesy of a turbocharged BOXER engine.
