Subaru SUVs are renowned for their roominess, amenities, reliability, and comfort. They're also go-to options for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and elevated ground clearance. While you can get adventure-ready capability in any Subaru SUV, the automaker's Wilderness trim takes that capability to the next level.

What is Subaru Wilderness

While many competitors have trims that are little more than rugged-looking appearance packages, Subaru Wilderness models have exclusive features designed to enhance their all-terrain abilities. The Outback was the first to offer a Wilderness variant, followed by the Forester. Then, in 2024, the Crosstrek became the third Subaru model to include the specialized trim level.

Notable Subaru Wilderness features include:

  • Dual-function X-MODE®: Subaru's advanced traction management system adds extra settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud)
  • Revised final drive ratio: for more confident climbing
  • 17-inch matte black-painted alloy wheels
  • Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires
  • Terrain-tuned suspension: Increases ground clearance from 8.7 inches to 9.3 in the Crosstrek, 9.2 in the Forester, and 9.5 in the Outback.
  • Increased approach/departure angles
  • Reinforced roof rails with increased load limits
  • Anti-glare hood decal: Stylish and functional
  • Anodized Copper-finished interior and exterior accents
  • StarTex® water-repellant upholstery

Which Subaru Models Offer a Wilderness Trim?

Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

The Subaru Crosstrek is a versatile subcompact crossover ideal for Somerville shoppers who want something comfortable and capable while retaining city-friendly maneuverability. The Wilderness trim utilizes the Crosstrek's more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine option (182 horsepower, 176 pound-feet of torque). Plus, the addition of a transmission oil cooler helps increase the maximum tow rating from 1,500 to 3,500 pounds.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has a 20 cubic-foot cargo area that expands to 54.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Plus, the reinforced roof rails have a stationary load limit of 700 pounds – ideal for a rooftop tent.

Subaru Forester Wilderness

Do you want something a little more spacious for your Bridgewater family while retaining a compact form factor? The Subaru Forester increases headroom and legroom while expanding the cargo area to 27.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 69.1 cubic feet behind the first.

The Forester Wilderness's upgrades are similar to those in the Crosstrek. However, it has a higher roof rail rating (800 pounds stationary), plus a 180-degree Front-View Monitor for improved trail visibility.

Subaru Outback Wilderness

A midsize crossover with wagon roots, the Subaru Outback combines expansive accommodations and comfortable seating with car-like drivability. The Outback Wilderness includes all the features mentioned above but with a static roof rail limit of 700 pounds. However, the Outback benefits from offering the roomiest passenger accommodations, the tallest ground clearance (9.5 inches), and up to 75.6 cubic feet of cargo space. It also boasts the most potent powertrain: a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER® engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.
