Subaru produces well-rounded SUVs with comfortable accommodations, excellent ride quality, advanced safety tech, and a proven reputation for longevity. They're also popular among outdoor enthusiasts thanks to attributes like standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and tall ground clearance. While Subaru SUVs are ready for adventure in any configuration, the Subaru Wilderness trim takes it to the next level, giving you the capability to explore new places and get home safely.

What is Subaru Wilderness?

More than just a rugged-looking appearance package, the Wilderness trim equips Subaru SUVs with specialized equipment to enhance their abilities beyond the asphalt. The 2021 Outback was the first model with a wilderness trim, followed by the Forester in 2022. For the 2024 model year, the Subaru Crosstrek has become the third Wilderness-eligible model as part of its third-generation redesign.

Subaru Wilderness models share several key equipment additions, including:

  • Dual-function X-MODE® advanced traction management system (with additional Snow/Dirt, Deep Snow/Mud settings)
  • Revised final drive ratio and stronger differential
  • 17-inch matte black-painted alloy off-road wheels
  • Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires
  • Terrain-tuned suspension with higher ground clearance (9.3" Crosstrek, 9.2" Forester, 9.5" Outback
  • Increased approach/departure angles
  • Reinforced roof rails
  • Anti-glare hood decal
  • Anodized Copper-finished interior and exterior accents
  • StarTex® water-repellant upholstery

Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

A versatile subcompact crossover, the Subaru Crosstrek is ideal for Somerville shoppers seeking practicality and capability in a conveniently sized package. It reserves 20 cubic feet for cargo behind the second row, expandable to 54.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is powered by the model's upgraded 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque). It also adds a transmission oil cooler, increasing its max towing capability from 1,500 to 3,500 pounds. The revised suspension increases ground clearance from 8.7 inches to 9.3, while the reinforced roof rails have a 700-pound stationary load limit, perfect for a rooftop tent.

Subaru Forester Wilderness

If you're seeking something more spacious for your Hillsborough family while retaining a compact form factor, check out the Subaru Forester. It offers ample headroom and legroom for all passengers, with 27 cubic feet to spare for cargo behind the rear seats (max 69.1 cubic feet).

The Forester Wilderness has similar upgrades to the Crosstrek Wilderness, including Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, except it has 9.2 inches of ground clearance and an 800-pound stationary load limit for the raised roof rails. The Forester Wilderness also adds a 180-degree Front-View Monitor for improved visibility on tight trails.

Subaru Outback Wilderness

A midsize crossover with roots as a wagon, the Subaru Outback provides the best of both worlds – spacious comfort, abundant practicality, and car-like drivability. The Outback Wilderness includes all the features mentioned above, including dual-function X-MODE®, all-terrain tires, reinforced roof rails (700-pound stationary limit), and a 180-degree front-facing camera. However, it has the roomiest passenger accommodations, the most cargo space (75.6 cubic feet), and the tallest ground clearance (9.5 inches). It's also the most powerful, boasting a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER® engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.

Subaru Wilderness Technology

In addition to their adventure-ready upgrades, Subaru Wilderness models also share several infotainment and driver-assistance technologies, including:
